Chuck's
commitment to the environment is not just for show! He has been
part of many different environmental projects and cleanups.
Chuck
was an original media member of the Rouge River Cleanup.
Chuck now serves on the board of Oakland Plus www.oaklandplus.org. An organization that promotes the health of all watersheds in Oakland County and it's surroundings.
Chuck
has studied the Amazon rain
forest in Peru during a week long expedition with world
class researchers. He often points out that "poor people"
don't make the best conservationists. This notion comes directly
from his contact with villagers in the Amazon.
Chuck
was scuba certified to
participate in the Nautical Coast Cleanup. He has served as
the honorary chairperson of this event for a couple of years.
This past year Chuck choose not to dive and clean the shoreline
of a river that leads to Lake St. Clair.
Chuck
spent another week of his life in Hawaii
on Mt. Kilauea. Volcanoes were studied along with vast
lava plains, rain forests, whales and bird sanctuaries. Accompanied
by world class scientists, Chuck studied hot lava flows up
close and how they affect the environment and climate change.
Chuck visited with The
White House for a conference on Global Climate Change
in 1997. Part of this day long event included a trip to the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Maryland.
Much was learned, challenged and debated. Face to face meetings
with President Clinton and Vice President Gore allowed Chuck
to ask a few tough questions.
Chucks
idea of hands on study has included chasing
tornadoes and flying through a hurricane. Everyday Chuck
can be seen talking about weather and reporting on science
related topics. It is estimated that Chuck Gaidica has talked
about our environment and the weather in at least 10,000 live
television broadcasts and at least 10,000 separate radio broadcasts
during his 20-year career.
Chuck considers himself an optimistic environmentalist. If global climate change is occurring; is it man made or a natural cycle? The first in line to help the environment in a hands on way, Chuck warns all of us to pay attention to the consequences of our behavior regarding the environment but he also warns us about the potential for abuse by those who could threaten personal property rights under the guise of "environmental correctness." Chuck points out that sometimes it is hard enough forecasting the weather for the next five days. So, when somebody looks him in the eye and tells him what the temperature of the earth will be 100-years from now, Chuck is a bit suspect! Chuck believes that a comprehensive and balanced Energy Policy is needed that encourages us all to conserve, explore and invent new technologies!
Chuck is proud of his two personal rides; a new Mercury Mariner Hybrid which gets nearly 33 mpg daily and his Harley Davidson motorcycle that gets about 53 mpg. |
